Live Well

When I first read the phrase, “unwrapping the gifts of ADD,” it was in a book by Dr. Edward Hallowell. He contended that the impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity that many people struggle with could also confer positive attributes for them. As I looked around at people who I know with Attention Deficit Disorder, I came to believe that he was absolutely correct. Many people with ADD/ADHD are successful because of their Attention Deficit Disorder.

Take the time to assess your gifts of ADD. What do you do well that you can directly link to your Attention Deficit Disorder? Are you a spontaneous conversationalist, able to talk about any subject to people from all walks of life? Does this gregarious side of your personality help you in your daily personal life or job? Develop your gifts, unwrap them and let them shine for the world, then build the best possible life for yourself.

Before you can unwrap the gifts, you need to deal with the negative symptoms of ADD.  The Live Well section of this website will provide tips and strategies for helping to alleviate those negative symptoms of ADD/ADHD and other neurological differences. Periodically, the content on this page will change.

Stress Reduction

There are many reasons to work on stress reduction when you have ADD. Stress affects the clarity of your thought processes. It can slow down your work production. Stress, and the hormone cortisol that travels with stress, can cause damage to your body's structures, including your brain. What can you do to lower your stress level?

A YouTube channel, Therapy in a Nutshell, offers easy, research-based ways to use your body to reduce your stress /anxiety level.  Here's a link to an excellent video that my students and I have used extensively. The video is 15 minutes long.  I have included the time stamps of particular strategies, in case you want to go back to them later.

Meditation

Research is beginning to show that meditation may have application in helping people with Attention Deficit Disorder. There are many different types of meditation that could help alleviate the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder. Meditation can relieve stress and help a person relax. It can help with clarity of thought and focus.  Maybe you already have your own meditation practice that you enjoy.  If you have never done any meditation, I have a great video for you.

This video is just 10 minutes long.  It goes over the basics of meditation. YouTube has a lot of excellent videos on the subject.  Our newsletter will also have articles and resources for meditation, from time to time
